Real-time physical health monitoring for adolescents by using novel wearable devices and secure Internet of things architectures
Cooperation on bilateral project between Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Beijing Normal University, China.
The first objective of the cooperation (lead: Normal Univesrity, China) is to focus on health monitoring of primary and secondary school students in Beijing City by investigating the technology combination of Internet of things, wearablesensors, cloud computing and big data analysis, which includes:
- The development of a new kind of wearable smart wristbands, which integrates some latest high-performance sensing chips for real-time collection of a variety of physiological and physical indicators in a movement of students, including heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, acceleration, etc.
- Physiological and physical data collected from smart wristbands will be collected and further analyzed and prepared for multidimensional visualization. The research and work in theabove described objective will be considered as an advanced research project for the construction of a large-scale cloud platform, which focuses on comprehensive evaluation of physical health and recommendation of personalized online exercise prescription.
The second objective of this cooperation (lead: Univesity of Ljubljana, Slovenia) is to evaluate the possible role of block-chain based trust in personalized health monitoring systems:
- To define the architecture and to create a prototype for an IoT based system for participatory sensing of physical health of adolescents and younger adults based on block-chain based trust management.
- The system will be validated in laboratory and near-real-life environment, which will in alter stages enable the involvment of the other interdisciplinary experts.

Recent technologies advances open plenty of possibilities to improve the quality of life of people, especially of elderly and those with emotional, physical and cognitive impairments. In this context the project aims to create an adaptive and integrated system, which will provide:
- continuous monitoring of elderly persons’ healthcare parameters and their environment with the least possible intrusive equipment;
- sense of presence of their family, friends, caregivers and health care personnel.
The lack of ICT platforms based on open standards is regarded as one of the most significant market barriers to the creation of new care & assistance paradigms with global interconnection and interworking. UNCAP delivers an interoperable platform based on open industrial standards that leverages on existing technologies for biosensing, indoor/outdoor localization and home-automation.
IRIS Smart Home is a demonstration apartment and clinical research facility (ambient assisted living lab) fitted with equipment and technical aids, from the simple to the most advanced, assisting the elderly and persons with various disabilities. Among them, Dom IRIS features a health telemonitoring system.
Goal of the project is to reduce costs connected to monitoring and treating diabetes patients.
